~*If I Owned A Laundry Mat*~

Hello Dear Friends! Please forgive me... this post is not really related to anything crafty... it is just my silly sense of self. You see, this morning I loaded my wool into the car and drove into town to visit the laundry mat. Once there, 10 washers were filled and running... and I sat waiting. While waiting, it dawned on me that my camera was in my purse. I was alone in the place... so where does my mind wander? Well... I got to thinking about how the laundry mat could be better... and I got to thinking that I could share it with you. So...

If I owned a laundry mat... this would be important...

I've visited the laundry mat many times in life ~ from childhood on into adulthood. I have never been bothered by going & often times have really enjoyed it. It is nice to be able to get a bunch of laundry done at one time... because you can load up so many washers at once.

I remember going with my folks when I was a kid. We would play on the laundry carts ~ you know, the ones with the wire basket & caster wheels. This laundry mat only had two. My laundry mat would have MANY... and the wheels would all be good. No one wants to use a clumsy cart. For some reason today, I forgot to get a picture of the cart I was using. But don't worry... there are lots more pictures to share with you from my laundry day.

My laundry mat WOULD have all the vintage charm of old soap signs...

and a fortune telling scale... even though it does seem to LIE about weight...

My laundry mat WOULD have a candy section for customers to treat themselves for all their hard work... the kids always like this too...

My laundry mat WOULD also have a soda machine... it it WOULD be fully stocked... unlike this one...

My laundry mat WOULD also have a television... but a clearer picture WOULD be nicer...

My laundry mat WOULD also be NO SMOKING... that pretty much goes unsaid with me anytime...

My laundry mat WWOULD have rows and rows of washers and dryers... the more the better... and as many as WOULD fit in the space comfortably...

For my laundry mat, I WOULD find and hire the best, smartest, most dependable mechanic in the area... one who WOULD NOT put tacky duct tape signs on the broken equipment. My mechanic WOULD FIX anything broken...

Where is the door?

Note says, "Out of Order takes your money :(" Really? Is that good?

Also for my laundry mat, I WOULD hire (or do it myself) a friendly and reliable attendant... one that WOULD be there to greet my customers with a friendly smile and WOULD be able to offer assistance when needed. And... one that WOULD also clean the messes and restock the toilet paper.

Why is there a lock for the toilet paper holder? It doesn't seem to be working to have a lock.

Speaking of locks... is all this really necessary? It kind of makes a customer feel a little unsafe. My laundry mat would NOT be riddled with locks and I would do anything possible to make my customers feel safe and comfortable...

Locks only keep an honest person honest. If a crook wants to be a crook, he or she will just get some bolt cutters.

And finally, my laundry mat WOULD be pretty too. I WOULD NOT have peeling wallpaper and old broken plastic (there were busted chairs too that I didn't get a picture of). A little paint can go a long way towards making a room clean and pretty...

My wash day wasn't really unpleasant... but I did notice a few things that could have been improved. My laundry mat would be a nice place to visit... but maybe I don't know anything about running a laundry mat... maybe I would go broke. At least my customer would surely enjoy their wash day at my laundry mat.

If I owned a laundry mat... I'm must saying.

Thank you dear friends for letting me be silly & posting some random goofiness. My wool is all cleaned and smelling fresh. It is folded and stack on the shelf... but needs to be sorted into color groups. I ran out of time today... but will work on it more tomorrow and share a picture of that soon.

Wishing you all warm smiles...

Betty

  1. There is a laundry mat beside the shops but I've never been in it. After looking at yours I don't think I'll bother.
Were the inside of the machines

  4. Hi Betty. Now that was a great post. I loved it...Seems like the owner is a slumlord...hmmmm....Yes, your laundromat sounds like it would be wonderful!! Now onto the wool business. how do you wash your wool? do you felt it? or wash it in cold and don't dry it? I'm new at this wool thing and want to learn all that I can. Thanks for any tips. I want to use mine for Santa beards and such...

  5. Patti, I was washing wool fabric for rug hooking. (yards and yards of it) I washed with regular Tide soap with the washers set on warm. I did dry it in the dryer with Bounce dryer sheets and an old terry towel to help fluff it.

If you are using raw wool for your Santa beards you simply wash it with a mild soap (like dish soup) with warm water in an old bucket. Just set it out on some old towels to dry.

Dorothy, the machines looked clean inside. Hopefully looks aren't deceiving! :)

  6. Great post and it sure reminds me of the lil' laundry mat in one of our nearby towns. It would be a great way to get a lot of wool washed all at once!

  10. This was tooo funny!!! I must say that I've spent my share of time in laundry mats and am so glad that I have my own washer and dryer :)

I think you should put management to the test and suggest improvements and see how cordial they really are. That is - if you even know how to get in touch with the management!

    Thanks for sharing!

  14. with your gift of decorating and your sweet self, people wouldn't be buying washing machines. They would want to come to your shop instead. I know I would :) Great post!

  16. Giggles! But sadly true. I remember going when I was a young child with my mom, and having fun with the carts, then again as a young adult before I purchased my first washer and dryer. Last week, my daughter went to the laundry mat and had her clothes scorched. Yours would be soooo much nicer!

  17. Betty,

It was fun to read this post because I too have thought about what "my" laundry matt would be like if I ever owned one! The one I've had to go to a time or two is just "okay" - get in and out fast. I sure wouldn't want to spend much time there like many families have to do. Mine would have comfy chairs and a place for kids to play and nice yummy foods in the vending machines - big folding areas - and many many other things to make the experience much nicer for people who don't have the luxury of owning their own washer and dryer..... You and I think alike - hey maybe one day we will open a laundry matt together!!

Oh, yes, and bright lights for people to sit and knit and stitch while they wait for their laundry to finish!
